Insulate and seal

  • Secure      the skirting. The skirting is the barrier between the bottom of      your home and the ground. Ensure it is secure and fully intact to protect      your plumbing and foundation from cold air.
  • Check      the "marriage line." For multi-section mobile homes,      inspect the marriage line—the seal where the sections are joined together to      ensure it is firmly sealed.
  • Add      insulation. Insulate any exposed pipes with foam pipe insulation      or heat tape, especially those in unheated areas like crawl spaces. You      can also consider adding extra insulation to the underside of the home and      around the water heater.
  • Seal      leaks. Caulk or use weatherstripping to seal any cracks or drafts      around windows and doors. Plastic adhesive sheets can also be placed over      windows for additional insulation.
  • Check      the roof. Inspect your roof for any leaks or damage, such as      cracked vents or flashing, that could allow moisture in.

Maintain heating systems

  • Inspect      the furnace. Have your heating system inspected and serviced      before the cold weather hits.
  • Change      filters. Regularly replace the filters on your furnace for      efficient operation.
  • Reverse      ceiling fans. Run ceiling fans on a low setting in reverse to      push warm air back down into the room.

Protect pipes

  • Keep      cabinets open. Leave cabinet and vanity doors under sinks open to      allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
  • Drip      faucets. In extremely cold weather, allow one or more faucets to      slowly drip. This keeps water moving through the pipes and prevents      freezing.
  • Disconnect      hoses. Remove and drain all outdoor garden hoses. Protect outdoor      faucets with insulated foam covers.
